HOST CLAN: Clan MacFarlane

The MacFarlane homeland is located in the highlands of Scotland between Loch Long and the west side of Loch Lomand, having the same boundaries as the Parish of Arrochar. The MacFarlane’s descended from a younger brother of a Celtic Earl of Lennox. When surnames were standardized, Parlan was the Chief of the Clan, thus his descendents became known as MacPharlain.

MacFarlanes’ fought in the battles of Flodden, Pinkie and Langside among others. At the Battle of Langside, Andrew, Chief of MacFarlane and three hundred followers turned a flank of Mary’s forces and captured three of her standards. For this valour, Andrew was awarded arms and crest. This first crest shows supporters holding bows and arrows. Later chief’s arms depict the supporters holding swords.

CLAN MacFARLANE SOCIETY, INC.

At present the chieftainship of the clan remains dormant. The original Clan MacFarlane Society was formed in 1911 in Glasgow, Scotland and reorganized in 1973 at Grandfather Mountain, North Carolina. The Society is recognized by both the Court of Lord Lyon and the Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs. The Clan MacFarlane Society is the only recognized representative of the Clan by those two bodies. The MacFarlane Society was the first ‘Society’ to receive arms and cresting from the Lord Lyon in 2000 showing a chain around the outside of the crest and a ‘globe’ to represent the world to indicate all international members.

The Society participated in the “Homecoming 2009” with fifty members who enjoyed a tour of Scotland prior to the Gathering at Holyrood Palace. We met with many MacFarlane’s from around the world! We marched with all of the other clans from Holyrood Palace to Edinburgh Castle, our banners and flags held high and proud. An estimated 6000 to 8000 clansmen and women endured the march- many more thousands lined the route welcoming us home!!!
